Srostki-I Burial Ground: Historical Background and Recent Findings
The article provides the previous research overview and gives the results of recent research of Srostki-I burial mounds — a large cemetery of the Early Middle Ages in the south of Western Siberia. The authors provide information of the location of the cemetery site, and also the results of its excavation in 1925 and 1930 which at first were carried out by the local historian M.D. Kopytov, and then by the archeologists M.N. Komarova and S.M. Sergeyev. The literature review comprising the information of the SrostkiI burial ground is performed, the authors pointing out the existing findings are far from conclusive. They also emphasize the prominence of the site for identification of Srostki archaeological culture and understand the necessity of its further exploration. Need of obtaining comprehensive information on Srostki-I burial ground prompted the renewal of excavation in 2012. In the course of two field seasons the recorded objects No 12 and No 8 were studied using modern technique. Under embankments of these barrows five tombs were investigated, wooden columns in pits and the remains of funeral feasts as well as different artifacts were found –a horn bow plate, semifinished penny whistle, arrows, iron arrow heads, a knife, bradawl, file, pottery piece, birch-bark container, iron and horn buckets, bronze earrings and a pendant. The objects found resemble the previously found archeological artifacts of the burial ground and confirm the earlier dating of the site from second half of the IX to the first half of the X cc. A.D.
