The Role of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society in Book Culture Development of the Russian Far East
In the article the role of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society (IRGS) in book culture development of the Russian Far East in the late XIX – early XX centuries is paid primary attention to. The contribution of Far Eastern branches of IRGS into the regional book industry, in particular, in book printing and distribution, librarianship has been under analysis. The range of printed materials of Far Eastern branches of IRGS is shown. The author notes that distribution of book printed materials was carried out mainly through exchange with learned societies and other organizations. Publishing activities of Far Eastern branches of IRGS promoted cultural and communicative ties on the territory of Russia and abroad. IRGS activity in the field of librarianship of the Russian Far East, the geographical society’ system of libraries development, are considered in the context of the country’s development as a whole, and especially, of Far Eastern territories. It has been concluded that the library stocks of Far Eastern branches of IRGS increased mainly due to donations and book-exchange and to a lesser extent to purchasing new books. Development of Far Eastern branches of IRGS book publishing promoted expansion of book-exchange ties, and therefore influenced libraries’ stocks growth. On the basis of the conducted research it has been concluded that printed materials of Far Eastern branches of IRGS reflects scientific, cultural and socio-economic development of the pre-revolutionary Russian Far East and can serve evidence of book culture and statehood unity.
