The Burial Rite of the Andronovo Culture of Steppe and Forest-Steppe Altai: Analyses of Gender and Age Differences
The paper considers one of the least studied aspects of the funeral rites of the Andronovo culture — identifying of certain characteristics of the burial practices, which could be related to the sex and age of individuals. The study uses the materials of th largest burial ground of steppe and forest-steppe Altai, like Firsovo XIV, Rublevo VIII, Chekanovsky Log X, Kytmanovo. Analysis of the ratio between the elements of the funeral rite and inventory with the sex and age of the buried showed that the most informative are such features as the depth of burial pits, character of grave facilities, the number, size and ornamentation of vessels, types of jewelry. At the same time it is revealed that some signs did not depend on the age and gender characteristics of the buried, and they emerged due to reasons of a different kind (the special status of the individual in society, its physiological features, etc.). The outcome of the study was the selection of the average model for the burial rite for groups of children and adults. Differences between male and female burials are less significant.
