Weapon of the Shelomok Culture
The article is concerned with the short-range weapon such as daggers, pole-axe, chain mace. The ranged weapon is represented by bronze and bone arrowheads and samples of Scythian type of quiver hook bows. The weapons date both from the early period of the Shelomok culture (VII–VI cc. B.C.E.) — a poleaxe, dagger with cross guard in the form of tails, twobladed bronze arrowheads, samples of bows, and from the developed period (V–IV cc. B.C.E.) — a dagger with kidney-shaped cross guard, model of horseman’s pick and different types of bronze and bone arrowheads. Geography of the items, analogous to the ones found in Tomsk Priobye, is very versatile. Thus, bows and arrowheads were found both in European and Asian parts of Scythian-Siberian world, t the image of a lying predator with his head drooped on his paws decorating the poleaxe is equivalent to the findings in Ukraine, Lower Ural, Southern Siberia and China. Shaft-hole horseman’s picks without protruding collar are typical of the second period of Scythian world, especially for Tagar and Pazyryk cultures. The chain mace is a unique finding. Evidently, this type of weapon was not often used, as the author does not know anything similar to it. All the weapons are typical of the broad territory of Scythian-Siberian world. The Shelomok culture was a part of cultures of that world, which is proved by the weapons, described in this article.
