Social and Historical Role of I. Yalguidze in School and Education Development in the North Caucasus
One of the important consequences of the accession of the North Caucasia into Russia was the establishment of the group of educated and professionally active intellectuals in the regional community. Ivan Georgievich Yalguzidze (Gabaraev) was one of the most famous Ossetian writers, proponent of the Enlightenment and Orthodox missionary. He was born in 1775 in the village of Zalda, the Java region, in South Ossetia. He belonged to the Gabaraev family, a branch of the Alguzata family of ancient Ossetian lineage. Yalguzidze graduated from theological school, then he worked as a teacher in the theological school in Tiflis. Yalguzidze spoke three languages — Ossetic, Russian and Georgian. In 1821 he published the first Ossetian alphabet book. Yalguzidze was the author of two Ossetian alphabets. The former was based on Georgian religious script, the latter — on Georgian civil script. Yalguzidze was the author of the large poem “Alguziani”. Being an educator, I. Yalguidze committed himself to development of education in Ossetia. His books, articles, translations were important milestones in the history of Ossetian culture. He has played a prominent role in creation of Ossetic alphabetic writting. The books by Yyalguidze give an idea of the situation in the Ossetic language at the turn of the 19th century. Only about one-tenth of his body of work has survived to the present day. This article describes new facts of Yalguzidze’s educational and theological activities. This article points out, that the spiritual development and education of young people is very much dependent on principles of the Christian philosophy.
