Jewish Entrepreneurs of Novonikolayevsk in the Early 20th Century: Settling and Traditions in House Building
Acculturation of Jewish people in Novonikolayevsk in the early 20th century is discussed in the paper. The most adventurous of them got the opportunity to leave the Pale of Settlement after the imperial policy had changed. Jewish people born in European, Ural and Siberian provinces started moving to the fast-growing city of Novonikolayevsk. Its fast rate of development and construction made it impossible to form any area of close-together settling for Jewish people, since their settling was based on the middle-class principle. Hebrew entrepreneurs » houses looked like most houses of ordinary design that were typical of Novonikolayevsk of the early 20th century. The on-site study of extant houses of Jewish people and careful examination of thier floor plans have revealed one of the ways to visualize their owners» adherence to the specific religious group, namely unification of neighboring yards according to the Sabbath. Obeying the Torah, which ordered each aspect of the Jewish people » lives in Novonikolayevsk, and traditions of their lifestyles remained the same. They worked out a way to mark the urban space and to build their houses according to the norms of the Hebrew law.
