The Armament and the Military Tactics of Kumycs in XVIII Century
The article on the analysis of different archival and literature sources considers the military organization of Kumycs in XVIII century. During the centuries north-eastern Caucasus attracted the invaders of neighboring empires of that time: Iran Shahdom, the Turkish and Russian Empires. The territory was a big battlefield for expanding spheres of influence in this region. Each party bore special plans: the Safavids sought not only to maintain its influence in the Caucasus, especially in the Caspian Sea basin, but also to extend the northern boundaries of the Padishahs to the Terek, the Turkish sultans wanted to expand their zone of control in the Caucasus and the Kuban region without diverting their attention from Dagestan. Russia considered it necessary to strengthen its positions in the Black and Caspian seas regions, having secured its southern borders of the Ottoman-Crimean invasions and having satisfied its needs for economic and political development of the country. As a result of advantageous geographical position Kumyk feudal possessions turned out to be in the sphere of political interests of the belligerent powers in the Caucasus. The Kumycs had to develop the efficient army and military arts. The author thinks the armament and the military tactics of the Kumycs were rather highly developed.
