Antischismatic Brotherhood of the St. Dimitry of Rostov in the Tomsk Diocese
The Brotherhood of the St. Dimitry of Rostov acted in the second half of the 19th — at the beginning of the 20th cc. on the territory of the Tomsk Governorate. Its work focused on the following courses: church activity, enlightenment, missionary activities and a struggle against the Schism movement. However, all the attempts to overcome the Schism were ineffective. The main reasons of this were the lack of specially trained missioners, low financial provisions for the realization of the missionary anti-Old Belief program (according to the version of the parish priests), huge parishes and a small number of Orthodox (Synodical) churches. In our opinion, it’s necessary to mark some positive trends in the activity of the brotherhood: it contributed to the development of the elementary education inthe Tomsk Governorate by opening and supporting church schools. It is significant to note that brethren did a great job of researching the Old Belief theories, collecting data and examining statistical information that served a valuable source for the present- day researchers.
