Public Celebrations in Siberian Cities at the End of the XIX — Beginning of the XX Centuries

The second half of the XIX — the beginning of the XX century saw considerable changes in celebrations and festivals of urban citizens. There appeared a number of new public secular events that testified to expansion of the public sphere and formation of new urban lifestyle. The end of XIX– the beginning of the XX century witnessed the appearance of new social activities such as public celebrations devoted to commemoration of memorable days and anniversaries, for example, Day of Siberia, 100th anniversary of Patriotic war of 1812, tercentennial anniversary of the Romanov dynasty. Some Siberian cities at the beginning of last century introduced celebrations of literature-related events. For example, A. S. Pushkin’s 100th anniversary was widely celebrated in 1899. The beginning of the XX century saw the constantly growing number of public celebrations such as Tatiana Day, Festival of a white flower, etc. The new holidays that became a part of urban life were eloquent of further social and cultural development of the region and provided citizens with new forms of leisure activities and social interaction. The new forms of city social activities were a sign of continuous transformation of traditional culture and further development of urban lifestyle.
