Data Base Technology in the Chronological Study of Novgorod Chronicles
Historical chronology aims at identification, analysis and reduction of chronological systems of the past. The components of these systems are widely represented in chronicles, namely in Novgorod chronicle tradition. Nowadays much attention is paid to the analysis of the content of chronicle texts as well as to the comparative textual examination but in such cases the data of chronology are often left unconsidered. However, sets of the Chronicles borders discovered by researchers in textual analysis of different chronicles can be proved or denied with the help of the historical chronological analysis allowing to fix the change of chronological systems. There has not been an attempt so far to use information technology (data base technology) to study chronological systems within a single chronicle tradition. «Novgorod Chronicle Chronology of XI ‑ mid. XIV c.c.» data base will facilitate chronological systems complex study and allow to form a clear vision of the astronomical and mathematical knowledge in north-western Rus. It may provide additional criteria to discover layers in chronicles and reveal cultural and historical ties of Novgorod territory with neighboring and far-away regions (Byzantium, Rome, etc.). The paper concludes that the data base created by the author can contribute to identifying chronological systems (easter, menology calendar, chronological, etc.) in Novgorod chronicles.
