The article is devoted to historiography and the main aspects of the study of the domestic interior of the XVIII–XX centuries as a synthetic form of art, solid architectural, historical and cultural phenomenon. The work on is chronologically structured. The paper touches upon the art — works focus on the history of interior design, analyzes its architectural — art features, researches interior decoration, furniture and household items in the context of the decorative and applied art, as well as the published material on the theory of architecture and design. The author defines the range of cultural works dealing with some aspects of everyday life and the objects of the interior of dwellings on the socio and socio-cultural basis. The third group of studies is devoted to the material culture of the past, including the interior and representing an important part of the source base. The group includes historical and ethnographic study materials. The Selected sections analyze the key trends in the study of the interior, the objective of life in the writings of leading domestic and foreign researchers of the XX–XXI centuries. Finally, the author comes up with the main conclusions of the research, notes shift in the study of the interior look to interdisciplinary field.
