The Archaeological Collections and Individual Finds in the State, Municipal, and University Museums of the Altai Territory
The Altai Territory has formed the museum network of institutions of various levels. A number of museums have individual items or entire collections with archaeological artifacts of historical, cultural, and scientific value. The article briefly presents the history of such collections in public museums. In the municipal museums most of the exhibits are random finds. However, among them there are exhibits that are unique for the south of Western Siberia. The funds of the university museums contain a significant number of ancient and medieval products obtained from academic archaeological practices and from the performing of economic agreements and grant projects. The main purpose of the article is to identify all the museums of the Altai Territory which contain archaeological items. The data available to the authors require clarification, addition and continuous monitoring. Professional identification and a comprehensive study of the exhibits must be a necessary step in the activities. The immediate task is to introduce them to the science. The intended direction will provide valuable information and increase the excursion and tourism potential of the museums under consideration.
