Archaeological Complexes of Turkic Culture in the Territory of Western Mongolia: Current State of Research (Analytical Review)
The article presents the review of current trends in studying of early Medieval Turkic archaeological complexes in the territory of the Western Mongolia. In spite of the fact that the sites of the second half of 1 thousand AD in the considered region have been known for a long time, the number of fully studied objects was very insignificant for long time. The new stage in studying of Turkic culture complexes in Western Mongolia began in the 1990‑s which was connected with possibility for numerous foreign expeditions to work in this territory. The significant contribution to studying of early medieval Turkic archaeological sites was made by the archaeologists of Altai State University. Systematic field work in Western Mongolia has been carried out since 2006 up to the present by the joint Russian- Mongolian Buyant expedition. For this period a significant number of new complexes have been revealed and recorded, more than twenty ritual objects have been dug out, a number of points with rock art have been investigated, a series of publications has been prepared. Besides, studying of sites of Turkic culture in Western Mongolia in the recent decade is carried out by Russian archaeologists from other centers, expeditions of foreign scientists, and also Mongolian experts.
