Newly Found Scythian-Siberian Animal Style Object in the Biya-Katun Interfluve
A bright object with a unique image made in the traditions of Scythian-Siberian animal style has been found in the interfluve of the Biya and Katun. The detail for fastening a quiver belt is decorated with the fighting scene of two griffins. The scene does not have direct analogies but some details of its arrangement and stylistic elements of the griffins are widely spread in the Scythian-Siberian art. The object dates back to the IV–III centuries B.C. and originates from the Bystryanskaya culture area. The image on the object is an original picture made in the traditions of Scythian-Siberian animal style, characteristic of Southern Siberia. At the same time it demonstrates a number of artistic borrowings in the arrangement and stylistic elements characteristic of the Middle East images. The object under study is likely to be an artistically interpreted local imitation of the imported samples. Appearance of such items in the IV–III centuries B.C. in Southern Siberia shows that it was the period of changes in Scythian-Siberian animal style caused by artistic traditions of Western Asia.
