Equipment of the Saddle Horse of the Nomads in Altai in the Xianbei-Zhuzhan Time from the Burial Mound Stepushka-I
The article introduces into the scientific circulation the results of a comparative study of saddle horse equipment from the burial mound Stepushka-I located on the territory of the Ongudai area of the Altai Republic. The comprehensive analysis of detected elements (bit, cheekpieces, and ornaments of bridles, girth buckles and other) allowed us to determine the relative chronology of ammunition of saddle horses of the Xianbei- Zhuzhan Time nomads in Altai (II – V centuries AD). The most reliable dating of bits shows the hook junction and small parts of the hook flection (Type 3), saddlegirth buckle with a mobile uvula, horn pegs with a defective upper edge. The objects are taken from burial mound N 19 and can date it to the 2nd half of the IV — 1st half of the V centuries AD. Chronological attribution of other items is to be revised taking into account their mutual occurrence with other artifacts in gated complexes of Altai. This publication significantly expands the source base to research the Belyj-Bom and the Verhny Uimon Periods of the Bulan-Koby culture of the Altai region.
