New Data of the Middle Paleolithic of South East Dagestan (Based on the Site Darvagchay-Bay-1)
The article presents the results of studies of the middle Paleolithic complex of the monument Darvagchay-Bay-1. These materials are key to understand the development of these cultural and chronological stages for the North- Eastern Caucasus. Until recently, on the territory of Dagestan were fewer than ten known localities where in the surface layers some Paleolithic-like objects were discovered. The information on discoveries of the Stone Age artifacts was not complete. The chronological period of the ancient people in the region is defined by the episode of the Riss-Wurm Interglacial. The stone tools are characterized by Levallois technique of splitting and the typical middle Paleolithic gun kit. Technotypological features of the stone industry with pronounced Levallois features, allow speaking about the specific form of the Middle Paleolithic of South-Eastern Dagestan. These studies allow us not only to reconstruct the culturalhistorical process on the territory during the Pleistocene, but solve problems related to the content and the adjustment of the boundaries of cultural and chronological ages of the Paleolithic in the Caucasus and the Aral-Caspian basin on the whole.
