Internal Family Relations Among Workers in Siberia in the Late XIXth — Early XXth Centuries
Family relations of workers in Siberia in the period under study were slightly changed. Egalitarian and democratization just started to develop. In general the society was dominated by traditional patriarchal relations, supported by the role of the husband as the head of the working family. It also was caused by the low employment of women in industry, which conserved former patriarchal relations. However, a working class family witnessed phenomena of decomposition and degradation: increased internal conflict, sexual promiscuity, drunkenness, asociality of a younger generation (manifested in the rise of mass hooliganism), weakening of control over the younger generation (educational functions). However, at the same time there was a tendency of new, more conscious relationship based on equality and self-control. The first was due to a marginal position of the considerable part of the workers, the second revealed the emergence of the working class and its inherent family of a new type. This situation was not any typical for Siberia only. The same processes occurred in the family of the Russian worker. Changes in Siberia were not that deep and profound due to its slower socio-economic development. The feature of Siberia is a more free marital relationship not only among the workers but also among the traditional layers of the Siberian society who became the basis for the formation of the working class.
