The paper presents conceptual directions in researching the transformation of the territorial nature protection system in the Irtysh transboundary river basin. It highlights the historical stages differing by orientation of the nature development and transformation. Modern political borders are regarded as one of the determinants of spatial planning of cross-border ecological network.
