The Possibility of Using Database Technology to Identify and Analyze the Subject Matter of Novgorod Chronicles (Based on the Novgorod Chronicles)
In modern research of the chronicles focus is given to their comparative text analysis, nevertheless in recent years new tendencies in the use of other techniques (formulary analysis, a systematic content analysis of the chronicles, etc.) have budded, that have not previously been used in chronicles study. The purpose of this article is to reveal the prospects of using database technology to identify and analyze the subject matter of Novgorod chronicles. The “Chronology of the Novgorod Сhronicles of XI — mid. XIV c.c.” database created by the author of this article provides the proper basis for this kind of research. The paper concludes that the database developed by the author provides the basis for searching and choosing the items of information by various criteria: the origin of the event (Novgorod, Lithuanian, Moscow, etc.), key words (proper names, toponyms, astronomical phenomena, natural phenomena, disasters, etc.), subject matter (political events, change of the church hierarchs, etc.), or time counting systems (years from the Creation, or the Nativity, Julian date, menology or Easter reference, etc.). All this allows to table data summary sheets throughout the chronological interval and to make analytical references in different fields based on them.
