Peculiarities of Manufacturing and Using Bone Tools for Tanning Purposes by Eluninsky Culture Population
The article analyzes bone tools found at Berezovaya Luka settlement related to the Eluninskaya Archeological Culture (22nd-20th centuries BC). The work results demonstrate opportunities provided by a complex approach to the study of bone tools that includes typological, technological, trace examination and planigraphic methods. This technique was first tested to analyze materials of the Bronze Age site of the Upper Ob. The study of macro and micro surface of over 200 tools as well as the creation of test samples provide information about certain peculiar features of tool manufacture and their use for tanning purposes by Eluninskay Culture population. The article describes the change of a tool surface caused by the influence of stone and metal tools on the work piece as well as the contact of a readymade bone tool with the material (skin) processed. The results of functional and technological properties of the tools are compared with the planigraphic analysis data which allows to locate the places within the settlement where household activities of fur and skin processing were carried out.
