The Existence of the Icon in Mass Culture at the Beginning of the 21st Century
The paper reveals current problems associated with the concepts of «Orthodox art» and «the contemporary icon,» which appeared in the post-Soviet time and became relevant in the 21st century. The ratio of tradition and innovation in the iconography, the synthesis of secular and religious, dichotomous and unambiguous communication of requirements of the Canon and creative painter»s freedom as a result of the evolution of the icon-painting art are the main issues which the author is trying to study, using the principle of «Golden Mean», and the scientific approach indicated by the term «possibilism». Due to it, the article shifts from the overall criticism in the direction of reform activism in the sphere of creativity. Mass culture and pop-religion are studied as a result of the work of modern mass media, building a virtual space without God, and from this point of view, have positive connotations. The cconsequences of mass culture are represented in the context of socialization and profanity of icons and faith. The existence and role of the ancient iconography and modern icon painting art are a part of mass culture. The article also considers the influence of modern social and cultural dynamics in Orthodox art and its revival in the 21st century.
