The Use of «Deer» Stones in the Construction of Turkic Fencings of the Mongolian Altai
The article is concerned with examples of reuse of ancient sculptures in the early Middle Ages in the territory of Altai and the adjacent regions. These materials supplement the research which was carried out in 2010 by Buyant Russian-Mongolian archaeological expedition headed by one of the authors of the publication in the territory of the Mongolian Altai near the villages of Hudzhirt and Bayan zurkh (the Hovd aimak). The research resulted in new materials about application of «deer» stones in the construction of Turkic fencings. These and other given facts testify that the early medieval population of Central Asia considered ancient sculptures a convenient construction material. These stones could have been used as the walls of fencings, substitutes of necessary sculptures or could have been changed into Turkic sculptures. All array of available data points to the lack of progressive autochthonous development of the Mongolian Altai nomads from Arzhan-Mayemir time to the early Middle Ages. For each historical period there was a peculiar world outlook caused by a certain level of social and economic development.
