Turkic Fencings of the Bayan-Ulgiy Aimak (Western Mongolia): General Characteristics
Now the Bayan-Ulgiy aimak of Mongolia is the territory well archeologically studied. The results of many years of research are summed up in the monograph providing the information about historical sites and monuments. However, the Turkic fencings have never been examined yet. The article describes the attempts of systematization and analysis of these early medieval objects. The author considers the peculiarities of the «elite» and «common» funeral sites located in the considered region of Western Mongolia. The study of the objects resulted in identification of several groups of Turkic fencings similar in structure to the complexes excavated in the territory of Altai, Tuva, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. It has been assumed that the recorded variety of Turkic constructions and their difference reflect lifetime position of the specific person in honor of which the complex was built. Difference in chronology of the studied objects can serve another explanation of this situation. The given quantitative indices indicate irregular distribution of fencings on the territory of Bayan-Ulgiy aimak which can be attributed to the climate favorable for development of cattle breeding.
