"Factory" Parishes of the Barnaul Spiritual Government

Orthodox churches of the Kolyvano-Voskresensky (Altai) mining district can be divided into "rural", "factory" and the temples at military fortifications. The study is based on five most typical "factory" parishes (Kolyvan, Zmeinogorsk, Suzun, Pavlovsk and Lokot plants). The cleric sheets of the Barnaul spiritual government were taken as the main source. All the churches in the factories and mines were built and financed by mining bosses, unlike rural churches, which were built entirely by the parishioners. This also explains best the state of the churches in the factories and mines. The rules of construction of churches in the plants were common. The plants had a great importance in the development of these settlements — the Church was perceived in the neighborhood of the industrial buildings. Originally the church was built only of wood in traditional forms of ancient Russian architecture. This was due to the fact that local building traditions and frames had not been formed yet. Only in the XIX century old wooden buildings were replaced with stone ones. The lack of local construction personnel dictated the need to invite craftsmen from other regions of the country (Tobolsk, Tomsk). The peculiarity of the cult construction in factory towns was that the church was built as an organic inclusion in the factory construction.
