The Republic of Altai is one of the most picturesque regions of this country distinguished by unique and rich landscape. The most visited and attractive is the Chemalsky region with its rural center Chemal. The village attracts tourists by good transport access, unique salubrious climate and colorful scenery. In addition, Chemal has a long multifaceted and interesting history, the knowledge of which allows us to create extra opportunities for its development. Recent years saw numerous efforts promotion the history of Chemal, its material and spiritual culture to its guests. The present work aims at characterizing the historical periods in Chemal development beginning with the first Russian settlers in the village up to the present days. These periods were identified as follows: the initial (1842–1917), the Soviet (1918–1940), the war (1941–1945), the post-war (1946–1990), the reform (1991–2002 year) and modern (since 2002) ones.
