The changes resulted from the transition to the market economy in the Russian higher education are considered in the article. The author analyses the statistic data of student number, the dynamics of specialities, the financing sources. Special attention is paid to the non-public higher schools. The author came to conclusion about the complex and deep changes in the Russian higher education in 1990s.
