This article is introducing the main results of the work on projecting population size in local subdivisions of the Altai Region. Based on extrapolation of contemporary demographic dynamics, future population size in cities and rural districts of the Altai Region is estimated in period till 2014 (short-term forecast). Forecasting technique is described, general consequences of projection are analyzed, and necessity of active complex population policy is proved. The article contains cartographic material.
